Additional car tax rate

Wondering if anyone knows what happens with the extra car tax you have to pay after the 6th year, when the first registration date and the tax date don't align

The Ghibli was registered on 1st March 2019. I bought it in the June so the tax is due on 1st June. The tax is £190 now plus £410 as the >40k list part.

Do they pro rata this for the final year? I can't find anything about this online?

From the DVLA website, seems pretty simple to me. Time isn’t based on date of registration but on second time it is taxed.

I bought it in the June the year after (was an ex demo, 15 months old). So how does someone know the date of the second tax?

This is interesting. You could just wait for the letter due in two weeks or so. If they do not pro rata then buy a year and then cancel and rebuy after nine months over the month end.

Mine dropped fully, despite there being 2 months to go till it was year six, I suspect due tax Being knocked out while with a dealer, then a 6 month stint.

2005 (pre-March 06) seems to be the winner then! Hopefully that will reflect in the value eventually.

Im sure you were all on the edges of your seats waiting for the outcome of this haha

Got the letter this morning, 12 months coming in at £497.50 so it is pro rated as said above. Bargain :p

I am struggling with this rate rise but then it dawned on me. Owners of 2017/2018 cars rate now drops. Some V8 cars for example from new until now we’re paying around £530 but those cars now drop to £190 after a year so the Government put everyone else up to cover the loss surely.

Surely it you are looking at a V8 car and it is a 2017 you would by the one registered after April as if the buy the same year but registered before April that year it will cost £500 more to tax a year. Will that will hurt values of those cars ?
